Ellen Zak Danforth
is a fiber artist who uses reclaimed materials such as sweaters and
afghans to create wearable art and home furnishings. Her work is an
outgrowth of her years of experience as an award winning quilt maker.
Ellen Danforth's scarves and blankets are made of reclaimed, all wool,
materials such as knit sweaters, crocheted afghans, and woven blankets.
These items are washed and felted, cut up, pieced and
appliquéd into a "crazy" type of patchwork, creating
one-of-a-kind designs. She retains elements of the original
items (pockets, plackets, collars and hems, for instance) in many of
her scarves and blankets. Original seam allowances are sometimes used
to create "dreadlocks" type fringe.
Because the materials used are found and not ordered from a
manufacturer, each scarf or blanket created is unique and cannot be
duplicated. She does, however, create series using similar groups
of colors and materials for each item. A series may contain two to ten
articles.
All products are made by hand in Colorado, USA. |
